A WORD FROM DAVE....

The shadow of drug abuse and performance-enhancing substances is beginning to lift over professional sports such as Major League Baseball. After years of denying the problem existed, overwhelming evidence finally compelled authorities to act. Up until 1994, only 4 baseball players had ever hit more than 55 home runs.  Between 1995 and 2007, 12 players hit more than 55 home runs- peaking with Barry Bonds’ 73 in 2001. This year with performance enhancing substances no longer a significant factor, only 2 major league baseball players are on a pace to hit 40 home runs. With a level playing field, it is only natural that we will see the actual strength and potential of our professional athletes instead of drug-induced, false feats of greatness.

It is for this reason that we feel compelled to emphasize that natural alternatives do exist that can help accelerate the development and performance of athletes who are committed to staying within the rules and regulations of international sports.

Attached you will find PHP’s Awesome Products for Athletes, a guide for maximizing performance and minimizing injuries through completely all-natural means. Top-rated athletes from around the world have used many of these products, so we are sure that you will benefit from this knowledge as well!

NNU and the Master Amino Acid Pattern

With the plethora of national and international regulations in effect to combat the use of performance enhancing substances that give one athlete an unfair advantage over another, it is important to separate the desire to maximize your bodies potential from stimulating or enhancing it into an unnatural state.  One is legal, healthy and encouraged; the other is not only illegal but also unsafe, unhealthy and hopefully discouraged by coaches, parents and sporting organizations.  Unfortunately, the temptation of steroids, andro, and other substances can be too much for aspiring athletes to resist. Once the pattern of reliance begins, it becomes a cycle that is difficult to stop.  That is why it is vitally important to offer 100% safe and natural alternatives that can provide reliable, impressive, and sustainable gains in muscle mass, strength, endurance, and fat reduction.

The key is to provide the body with all of the necessary essential amino acids in the proper ratio and form, so as to maximize their utilization metabolically and reduce their impact on the liver, kidneys, and blood.  Unfortunately, most protein sources, such as soy, whey, egg whites, and meat, are underutilized by the body and cause it to become catabolic (a repairing, cleansing mode) instead of anabolic (a building mode) thus slowing down the gains in muscle mass, strength, and reducing endurance by creating acids in the blood and tissue.  One way to reduce that debilitating effect is to examine the NNU or net nitrogen utilization.

NNU is described as the rate by which protein contributes to positive metabolic functions (creating muscle, energy, or lean connective tissue) and what percentages is left behind as metabolic waste (feces).  Most proteins that come from animal sources achieve no more than 45-50% NNU meaning that any excess of protein puts an incredible burden on the lymphatic system.

Another important component in protein synthesis is our bodies’ ph or acid alkaline balance.  This is why it is so vitally important to include alkaline forming foods like green vegetables, wheatgrass, barley grass, and alkaline grains like Quinoa.  This will protect our bones from osteoporosis since most alkaline forming foods have highly bio available calcium as they buffer the uric and lactic acids that harm our bodies.

Protein is so important to our metabolism that hundreds of published papers exist that indicates a wide variety of uses and applications in the clinical field.  In fact, aminos acid maybe the key element in the battle against morbid obesity.  This is due to the ability to help the body eliminate excess fat cells and reduce the appearance of flab and over hanging skin by affecting the balance between inter and extra cellular fluid.

Additionally, studies indicate that the right combination of proteins or patterns, might affect the way neuro transmitters contribute to memory attention span, concentration and learning.

In conclusion, I believe proteins have tremendous potential in clinical applications and will have wide implications in the lives of those who use it.

Questions on Safety of Human Growth Hormone

by Drucilla Dyess

A Stanford University study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on Monday, March 17th, concluded that muscles created by human growth hormone (HGH) don't perform as well as they appear to. In fact, the treatment may cause impairment. In addition, the artificially added muscle can actually tire athletes and increase their risks for injury.

The Stanford research team performed and analyzed 27 studies of HGH with a total of 303 participants between the ages of 13 to 45. The studies tested the physiological effects of growth hormone compared with an inactive placebo. After taking HGH under medical supervision, the healthy volunteers gained about 5 pounds in weight and though they seemed to have more lean body mass, which could be associated with more muscle, no one showed any increase in muscle strength of their biceps and quadriceps. They were also more likely to suffer from joint pain and carpal tunnel syndrome.

The Stanford researchers also noted hormone-related problems in study participants who were exercising. Some studies showed that those who took HGH generated more lactate, causing muscle fatigue. The fatigue was so great in one study that two cyclists quit a workout. "In growth hormone-treated groups, people think they'll get an energy boost, but we found higher rates of fatigue," said lead investigator Hau Liu, formerly of Stanford and now at San Jose's Valley Medical Center.

Since professional athletes may take HGH dosages up to five times higher than the doses studied by scientists as well as take the dosages in combination with other drugs such as steroids or insulin, the research team advised caution in interpreting the data. The study also did not address whether HGH accelerates athletes' recovery from injury, although this is often a reason for its use.

According to Liu, study techniques could not distinguish between lean solid tissue and fluid mass indicating that much of the muscle increase was due only to fluid retention and not actual tissue growth. This could explain why increases in body mass did not improve strength.

"This study summarizes what we know to date," Liu said. "If we really want to answer the question 'How do you hit a baseball further?' we need to understand how athletes take this and other agents."

Regarding the young and healthy volunteers who took the HGH, Liu stated, "We felt that the risks outweigh the benefits." However, for sick people with proven growth hormone deficiencies, and the elderly, he stated that for them, the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks. Liu went on to say that further work would be needed to truly measure the impact in athletes.

HGH is produced naturally by the body’s pituitary gland to regulate height, muscle and organ growth. A synthetic version of HGH has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use by children who suffer from growth disorders or AIDS patients who have lost weight.

The International Olympic Committee, Major League Baseball and the National Football League have banned the use of HGH and United States law prohibits its use for sports enhancement. However, it is very popular among athletes because it is undetectable in tests and can be easily obtained from distributors who sell it illegally over the Internet, as well as through mail order.

A wide range of athletes has been implicated in the illegal use of HGH. The "Mitchell Report" released in December of 2007 identified 89 Major League baseball players who may be using performance-enhancing drugs and many of them have admitted to their use. Even several musicians, such as Timbaland, Wyclef Jean and 50-Cent have also been suspected of using HGH to maintain extraordinary physiques.

Medical experts are hopeful that the Stanford study may cause athletes to think twice about risking their careers. Roberto Salvatori, Endocrinologist at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, stated, "I think there will be resonance among athletes or athletic teenagers [or] anybody who was thinking about using it, because there really is a lot of underground mythology about it. This may give the ammunition to convince athletes or young kids that it is not really worth using, that it may not have the effectiveness that they think it will have."

Grass and Endurance

The Athletes' Use of Wheatgrass

By Bruce McVay

The newspapers have recently published several articles on recent animal studies that have proven that very low calorie-highly nutritional diets enhance strength, endurance, and life longevity.  Wheatgrass has by lab analysis proven to be very close to the, if not the, foremost plant in the category of nutritive value per ounce.  Being an ultra distance runner for 5 years (races from 30 to 100 miles or more), I tried nearly every physically enhancing supplement and natural food source to improve my health, stamina, and oxygenation process.  One and one-half years ago, I began juicing 1 to 6 ounces of grass daily.  After 1 to 2 months of cleansing (which consisted of a few headaches and itching) I began to notice tremendous changes in my performance, energy, stamina, etc..  Always in the past I was a middle to rear of the pack racer. Wheatgrass changed that.

This year I ran a 26 mile race in the Teton Mountains and won by half an hour.  The race was in top of the Tetons, 12,000 to 13,000 feet high, and down to Jackson Hole Wyoming.  Ultra distance runners from all over the United States participated.  At the 18 mile checkpoint some people with twice the amount of training as I, quit the race.  Two or three finished.  Something I noticed was that I never hit the wall (nausea, etc.) like I had sometimes in previous races. I was exhilarated all the way to the end of the race

On June 5th, of this year I participated in 11.5 hour run-a-thon at the Utah State Prison. I ran over 62 miles eating primarily wheat-barley grass juice mixed into fresh apple juice. During this time I expended over 6500 calories. My nearest competitor was over 10 miles behind.  These are factual examples, but the best result is the way I feel all the time, as well as during the race...i.e. very comfortable under physical and mental stress.

Some people would think that I increased my training or trained long and hard for these races, but in reality, I cut my training in half during this period of time.  I had cut my mileage from 60-90 miles per week to 30-40 miles per week. Imagine, less training, but better performances in training and in races! I have broken most of my own personal records. Another thing that amazed me about the prison race, was that my laps at the last part of the race were as fast as the laps at the beginning.

Wheatgrass helps numerous processes in the body, but improved oxygenation (enhanced oxygen absorption) is the best one, I believe.

Do you have an interest in a major change in strength, endurance, and energy? Then give wheatgrass a 6 months try. It will work! Don't believe me?  Let's go for a run in the mountains.
