A WORD FROM DAVE....

Osteoporosis is mainly a condition that is almost uniquely evident in Western society because of the following common denominators- poor exercise habits, poor eating habits, and a reliance on animal-based protein sources. This is a 3-headed monster because only as long as your muscles remain strong will your bones remain strong. Due to the law of resistance, your musculature dictates the strength of your bones- much like large sail ships have long strong ship masts and small sailboats have thinner, less sturdy masts; a physically fit person will naturally have strong bones. But this is only one part of our dilemma. The over-dependence on animal protein triggers chemical reactions that only alkalizing the diet can reverse. The pretense of needing to take calcium to prevent or to mitigate osteoporosis is simply a myth that has been perpetuated for far too long! The 3rd causative factor may be a result of the false science behind avoiding the sun, which I talk about below in the article titled "The Return of the Prodigal Sun". May is 'National Osteoporosis Prevention Month' and so we have dedicated our Monday Morning Health Minute and our Wednesday night Consumer Education conference call to this very important subject. Please read the following articles to help you gain fresh insight – and then pass this on to your family and friends to help raise their awareness, as well.

Be sure to tune in live Wednesday night 6 pm PST/ 9 pm EST by calling (212) 461-5800 and entering pin code # 8246 when prompted.

Osteoporosis:  A Sign of the Body's Intelligence

By Deborah Fulghum Bruce

Most people believe the two most common reasons for the development of osteoporosis are 1) heredity, and 2) the hormonal changes associated with menopause.  Although these two factors do play a role, neither of them is a cause of osteoporosis.

What is osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones lose density, largely as a result of a calcium deficiency. The crucial question is, why would bones lose calcium?  The answer is because calcium “buffers” acids.

Remember the human body is an absolutely brilliant creation and the number one instinct in the body is to stay alive and osteoporosis occurs when our bodies defend themselves against death.  The critical point here is that the blood must remain within a very narrow, slightly alkaline pH range, or, quite frankly, you literally are dead. It is that important. The intelligence that runs your body will battle to keep your blood stream at the proper pH.  Over-acidity is the enemy.

The kinds of acids that are a problem for people today are acids that are formed as the result of eating unnatural foods and excessive amounts of protein, which is putting a dangerous strain on our bodies. Other specific acid producers for the human body are alcohol, carbonated beverages, white sugar, white flour, almost all processed foods, and drugs (both legal and illegal). Sounds familiar, doesn't it? These are the foods that comprise the typical American diet.

With this kind of diet we can see that the body must make good use of its buffering systems! Unfortunately these buffering systems use minerals to neutralize acids. Where do these minerals come from? They are abundant in fresh fruits, grains and vegetables that supply us with the necessary nutrients to keep our bodies in balance. What happens when we do not eat enough fruits and vegetables but instead eat your average Western diet? First, we do not get enough minerals in our system, and conversely, we create an extraordinary demand for minerals in order to buffer the acid buildup.  In its attempt to stay alive the body will do anything it can to neutralize an acidic blood stream. When mineral reserves in the body are low or gone, the body will steal calcium from the bones in order to neutralize the acid condition.  If you are like most modern Americans, your alkaline reserves are already dangerously depleted and your body begins to cannibalize calcium from your teeth and bones to get the lifesaving minerals it needs to keep your body fluids in balance, and osteoporosis has begun.

What is the answer to the problem of osteoporosis? First of all, take away its cause: excessive acid production in the body from processed foods, alcohol, and all the other acid forming ingredients commonly found in today's diet. Then build up the body's alkaline reserves with whole, unprocessed, uncooked, organically grown fruits and vegetables that are rich not only in calcium but all of the other vitamins and minerals that keep the body running smoothly, so that calcium will not be leached from the bones.

Secondly, exercise regularly; studies showing daily exercise with light weights or resistance training to be absolutely necessary in any osteoporosis battle plan (editor's note: you will find the link to  PHP's Osteoporosis Battle Plan formulated by David Sandoval down below in red) and the bones will strengthen to meet the needs of the muscle (the bigger the sails the stronger the mast). Upper body weight-bearing exercises are important. Osteoporosis does not start in your legs, it starts in your spine and shoulders, so walking is not going to do it.

We also recommend you make our Organic Barley Green Juice or Organic Kamut Blend part of your daily diet. These are both deep green leafy vegetables rich in calcium and alkalizing agents recommended by all authorities for building strong bones and teeth. As you work toward living a more natural lifestyle, you will no longer have to worry about the ravages of disease or brittle bones. Mother Nature, Cosmic Intelligence, God, whatever you want to call the Power that created us- designed us to be well and healthy. That is real Intelligence. All we have to do is cooperate.

Return of the Prodigal Sun!

For years, doctors and health advisors have been adamantly spreading the warning that sun bathing or “sun worshipping” as it is often referred to, is dangerous and could lead to skin damage, wrinkles, dryness, sun spots and of course melanoma, a skin cancer.  Well, guess what- the sun is back!!  That’s right, I believe people now suffer from sun deprivation and it is compromising their health.  The sun contains many benefits, including far infared light, that is therapeutic and cleansing.  More importantly, sunlight helps provide the body with a vital nutrient, vitamin D-our bodies were designed to be “solar collectors” that manufacture or synthesize this essential nutrient metabolically.  Vitamin D is commonly known to help reverse osteoporosis, strengthen brittle bones, and assist in the formation of strong teeth.  What many people do not know is that a lack of adequate sunlight lowers the immune system and allows cancers to proliferate in the body.  Clinical studies show that our bodies need up to 1000mg of vitamin D per day to cut ovarian, colon, and breast cancer risk in half!  So how much sunlight is enough?  How much is too much?  Well, the answer to these questions is really pretty simple. According to cancer researcher Dr. Kate Arney, we actually need relatively little sunlight to absorb adequate amounts of vitamin D.  I recommend a maximum of 40 minutes per day of direct sunlight in the winter and 30 minutes per day in the summer.  Okay, I know you are all wondering “how do I get sunlight in the winter?  Am I supposed to wear my bathing suit in the snow?”  Well, no need to worry, in order to collect sunlight all you need is your two hands (palms up) and your face exposed for 15-20 minutes in the morning and 15-20 minutes in the afternoon.  In one study published by Harvard University, lung cancer patients were 40% more likely to die when the surgeries took place in the winter! But remember the sun still holds dangers for those who get overexposed to sunlight. This brings us to sun protection.

Sunscreen can be dangerous. Why?

Well, for two reasons. First, many (most) sunblocks used in the U.S. do not adequately protect us from all of the effects from harmful sun rays. Secondly, sunscreen gives people a false sense of security. Users believe they become immune to the sun, due to the fact that they are “protected.” [Much like people eating “low fat” cookies, people mistakenly eat 10 or 12 thinking that since they are better for you that you can eat a lot, actually in the end you consume more calories, fat, and sugars!] When you choose a sunscreen, look for two things- UVA and UVB protection. You see, there are actually two types of ultraviolet light, UVA and UVB. UVA, or ultraviolet light type A, includes solar rays from 320- 400 nanometers- this causes skin to tan. They are the longer UV waves and penetrate more deeply, causing wrinkles, drying, and poor skin texture. The shorter UVB at 290-320 nanometers is what we are told we need to worry about; this is what most sunscreen works well for, which is good since this is what leads to “sunburn” and skin cancer. However, there is a hidden danger; UVA rays actually cause wrinkles and skin damage and are just as intense in winter as summer. Note: These UVA rays penetrate water, clothes, and clouds so even when you do not know it, you are affected! Unfortunately, most sunscreens only protect you against UVB. The level of protection is typically denoted using a rating system created by the FDA called SPF. This determines how long a person can tolerate the sun without getting burned, e.g.; if a person gets burned in 5 minutes without sunscreen, an SPF rating of 10 would mean that it takes 10 times 5 minutes or 50 minutes before they burn. So, remember to look for the appropriate sunscreen for your skin type, special note: never trust an SPF number over 15 because they are not that much more effective. Also, always choose a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection since you absolutely need both to avoid sun damage that leads to wrinkles, skin damage, and contributes to signs of aging!

So remember, like anything good for us, too much could be bad. But do not avoid the sun completely or you may be over-correcting and depriving yourself of an important aspect of skin and body health.

Calcium and the "Osteoporosis Battle Plan"

"Consult your health care professional in order to determine whether calcium supplementation in conjunction with a diet rich in calcium is appropriate. Excess calcium is often deposited in soft tissues, possibly causing arthritis, arteriosclerosis, glaucoma, kidney stones, and other problems. We believe taking Calcium supplements may cause problems within the body and not offer any benefit- hardened arteries, arthritis, and kidney stones are a few examples. In fact some research shows that taking calcium may play a much smaller role in creating strong bones then once thought. Consider the following: our bodies create an enzyme that dissolves our bones to create a buffer against toxic uric acids. Unless we eliminate the cause of acids, the body will not stop this process. The secret is to change your diet and make sure to exercise. If that does not convince you, review the following: “a crab can molt and make a new shell in only a day, in seawater that contains very little calcium. Analysis of the body of a molting crab has found that it contains only 3 percent of the calcium it would require to make a new shell. Hens deprived of calcium in their diets began to lay soft-shelled eggs; when fed purified mica, which is rich in potassium (not calcium), they scratched, rolled in, and pecked at it, and the following day their eggshells were hard again. The hens appeared to have transformed potassium into calcium. Other researchers continue to demonstrate that there is something beyond basic chemistry that goes on energetically in the interaction of plants with soil- and the interaction of plants and animals who eat them.”  (Please note: this excerpt, which can be found in the Osteoporosis Battle Plan, was taken from page 163 of David Sandoval's book The Green Foods Bible)

Also from the Osteoporosis Battle Plan:

·         Estrogen deficiency is the leading cause of osteoporosis in the menopausal female. When estrogen levels drop during the years around menopause, the cells that remove dead portions of demineralized bone become more sensitive to hormone signals that increase their activity.

·         Inability to convert vitamin D to its most active form: in its most active from, vitamin D stimulates the absorption of calcium within the body. Kidney or liver problems, and/or deficiencies in estrogen, magnesium, boron, and sunlight will inhibit the conversion of vitamin D into its most active form.

·         Purium Health Products knows that boron is required for the activation of both estrogen and vitamin D. Try our Bio Fruit which is rich in natural boron found in prunes and plums when you can't get enough of it in your diet. (take 2 servings daily)

·         Magnesium – mediates the secretion of hormones that maintain proper calcium concentration in the blood. Women with osteoporosis have been found to have lower bone magnesium content and other indicators of magnesium deficiency. (We recommend starting a daily green drink regimen including 3 servings of our Organic Kamut Blend, a wheatgrass rich in magnesium)

   Bio-Fruit and Organic Kamut Blend

Bio-Fruit:

The variety of powerful nutrients available in fruits and berries is as impressive as the number of fruits and berries themselves.  Unfortunately, the fruits people regularly eat are not the most nutritious, and some people do not eat any fruits and berries at all.

Availability is only one of the problems people face when trying to consume meaningful volumes of fruit daily.  Other problems include high sugar levels in fruits that may affect blood sugar, pesticide residues that may be harmful to our health or a lack of “tree ripened” qualities like enzymes and minerals that are necessary for proper digestion.

Bio Fruit provides useful quantities of fruit nutrients, in a convenient and tasty form.  It may contain the most impressive varieties of nutrient dense, pesticide free, phyto-nutrient packed fruits in one place since the Garden of Eden, including:

  • wild blueberry
  • prune
  • cranberry
  • raspberry
  • grapeseed extract
  • bilberry
  • tart cherry and more!

How to use: Mix 1 scoop (1 tbs) with 6 oz of juice or water once a day.  For a delicious fruit smoothie add apple juice, another favorite juice and ice and mix in a blender.

Click here for more info or to purchase Bio-Fruit.

Organic Kamut Blend:

The ultimate wheatgrass juice from the ancient kamut plant, blended with other valuable cereal grasses- oatgrass, and alfalfa. One serving is equal to one ounce of fresh wheatgrass juice.

The use of wheatgrass has moved from healing clinics to juice bars due to its phenomenal effect on the body.  Now we are proud to bring you the ultimate cereal grass blend that includes:

The world’s finest wheatgrass grown from the ancient Egyptian Kamut seed

The sweet taste of oat grass juice

The mineral rich juice from mature alfalfa leaves.

Our amazing propriety low temperature process allows us to convert the delicate juice into a stable and potent concentrate, which can be added to water or juice to give you the green boost your body needs. Organic Kamut Blend greatly benefits your immune, circulatory, and digestive systems. Most people also notice a natural increase in their energy levels. It provides the body with an abundance of active enzymes, vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll, antioxidants, and other important phytonutrients in a natural medium.

Organic Kamut Blend contains the necessary trace minerals, magnesium, potassium, and chromium. Magnesium activates the enzymes that catalyze reactions between phosphate ions and energy to muscle cells. It is also associated with regulation of body temperature, neuromuscular contraction and synthesis of protein. Potassium is the principle postively charged atom in intracellular fluid and is of primary importance in its maintenance. In conjunction with sodium and chloride, it aids in regulation of osmotic pressure (dissolved fluid absorption into the tissue) and acid-base balance. Chromium, a very hard metallic element, helps regulate metabolism and has recently become the superstar of the weight loss industry.

Organic Kamut Blend also provides protein-completing factors, all of the eight essential amino acids, as well as a number of free form proteins that are reconfigured and used by the body to create lean connective tissue and enhance reproductive functions.

How to use: Take one scoop (2 tsp) mixed in water, aloe, apple, carrot or other vegetable juice, two times a day, best taken on an empty stomach.

Exercise and Osteoporosis

by Jule Klotter

To create and maintain healthy bones, people must engage in physical activity. Mechanical stress, such as walking, stair climbing, weight-lifting, or hard physical labor, apparently causes calcium phosphate crystals in the bone to produce tiny electric currents. This piezoelectric effect stimulates bone-building cells (osteoblasts) to deposit more mineral salts to strengthen bones in the stressed areas. Without mechanical stress for a prolonged period, bone-resorbing cells (osteoclasts) will tear down unnecessary bone. Exercise encourages the secretion of calcitonin, a thyroid hormone that inhibits the bone-resorbing osteoclasts. In addition to strengthening muscle and promoting bone density, exercise improves balance and coordination, which decreases the risk of falling. Most fractures that afflict the elderly result from a combination of falling and brittle bones.

People who already have osteoporosis need to seek the advice of a doctor or physical therapist who can design an appropriate strength training program. Care should be taken when bending forward at the waist because such activities increase the risk of compression fractures in the spine. Twisting movements (common in golf or bowling) and the abrupt stops, starts, and weight shifts that occur during racket sports further stress the spine. Exercise programs have helped middle-aged and elder women reduce their rate of bone loss and/or increase bone mass.

David Sandoval adds, "Since Osteoporosis starts in the spine and shoulders, regular upper-body weight bearing exercises are most effective in preventing the onslaught of this condition- just walking is not going to cut it!"
