Free enterprise is the theory that supports supply and demand- if people demand it then the world will provide it. When people reject it, then manufacturers are discouraged from selling it- a manufacturer will not waste their time on goods that consumers will not spend money on, its that simple.

This system works when consumers are fully educated about the origin, the quality and other details relating to what they consume.

Examples could be- 

• Is it part of a “green” initiative?
• Does it come from a country whose political policies I don’t believe in? 
• Does it come from a company that is responsible for an ecological disaster? 
  
  In other words- can we use our economic boycott to voice our political opinion? 

In this environment, supply and demand can be forces for positive change in the world.

However, under the secretive veil and the manipulative political agenda of large scale agribusiness- our right to information, our freedom of choice and our ability to participate in political discourse have been hijacked by lawyers, political action committees, secret ballots, and back room deals.

A perfect example is the issue of Monsanto's Round-up Ready (genetically modified) Alfalfa which is being bullied through the USDA by a company thought by many (more and more each day) as less than scrupulous, to say the least.

If they are given carte blanche, it potentially may very well cause irreversible damage to the delicate genetic lineage of the father of all foods, alfalfa, under the guise of needing to create a "weed-resistant" alfalfa.*

At Purium Health Products we would like to encourage you to fight against this attempt to unnecessarily alter and "rescue" a food that is not in distress! We are not anti-science, as some pro-GMO people like to chalk it up to, we are pro-knowledge. Right now, no one entirely knows the possible long term dangers/risks of these man-made "foods" but science is showing that they do have the potential to infiltrate and therefore ruin organic crops and they do have the potential to cause many of the modern diseases now known to man-  either way, we do not want to be guinea pigs for companies whose interests lie with their profit margins and not with what is good for humanity and the environment.

NOW IS THE TIME TO BE INFORMED AND ACT ACCORDINGLY!

 At Purium we depend on alfalfa, it is the highest source of chlorophyll out of ALL land plants and an integral ingredient in our Organic Kamut Blend.  So ultimately, if GM alfalfa can easily infiltrate organic alfalfa as has been shown, the ramifications of Monsanto's devious actions could come full circle to a family owned company determined to keep GMOs out of our supply!

Research shows that GMOs are not as sustainable as Monsanto may lead us to believe. We believe in supporting time-tested organic farming and not supporting products called 'food' in name only, products that have not be proven to be safe for us or the land we live on.

We encourage all Purium supporters to vote with your dollars every day and let your voice be heard loud and clear at times like these!

Background on the GE alfalfa issue

On December 16, 2010, the USDA released its Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of Monsanto’s genetically engineered Roundup Ready Alfalfa. The EIS was conducted in response to a court decision demanding more thorough analysis of the potential environmental, economic and health impacts of GE alfalfa before approving deregulation. The EIS outlines three options for addressing GE alfalfa:

1. Fully deregulate it (allow it to be planted anywhere)
2. Fully regulate it (non-production; USDA has indicated this is not an option it would pursue)
3. Conditionally deregulate it (allow GE alfalfa to be grown with certain rules and restrictions USDA would impose to minimize or limit contamination of non-GE crops)

Shortly after releasing the EIS, USDA indicated their preference for the third option and asked the biotech, non-GE and organic communities to convene to try and find common ground for formulating rules and restrictions under conditional deregulation.

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack recently invited representatives from agriculture, business and consumer organizations to explore coexistence between non-GE proponents and GE proponents. It showed refreshing leadership after many years of debate that has cost farmers with contaminated crops in this country millions of dollars in litigation over the years.

Our non-GE and organic farmers continue to be concerned with crop contamination and market rejection. Independent studies in the U.S. and in other countries on GE crops have documented a long list of reasons for concern, including evidence that these crops lead to herbicide-resistant super-weeds and require the use of more toxic herbicides. As mentioned above, organic alfalfa is used as feed by most organic and non-GE dairies. Also, the policy set for GE alfalfa will most likely guide policies for other GE crops as well.

There are rigorous standards in place for USDA-certified organics. We are encouraged that USDA has taken tentative steps and we believe its coexistence plan can support all consumers, farmers and agribusinesses. We believe true coexistence should include three central issues:

• The protection of seed purity for all farmers, including organic, so we maintain variety and avoid massive mono-culture;
• Compensation by the patent holder to the farmer for any losses related to the contamination of his crop; and
• Public oversight by the USDA rather than relying on the biotechnology industry to voluntarily try to contain GE contamination as the USDA has the authority to protect all US agriculture.
