ARTICLE OF THE WEEK - Testimonial

To whom it may concern,

My name is Randy Fine and I have been a personal trainer since 1986. I have had several different certifications and I am presently ACE certified.

Shelly Baron came to me on about 10-22-2010, looking to gain strength and to improve his overall fitness. Being 79 years old I informed him that the progress would be slow. He was undaunted and indicated that he was ready.

I started with the weights light looking for any indication that he had an injury or physical limitations that he was not aware of.

Shelly was only coming once a week due to business commitments. I was staying at 10 repetitions with 20 different exercises of 1 set each and many of his weights went up each week as is to be expected in the beginning due to the weights being deliberately set low and also due to motor nerve activation to a new event.

By December his progress had slowed tremendously as is expected and a plateau was reached. Around this time Shelly informed me that he was going to begin a fast. I am not certified in nutrition and do not pretend to be.

I am aware of almost all the diets that are in the market place as I am educated by my clients and the media. I also do as much independent research as possible on anything that my clients may be undertaking so that I can be informed as to what to expect.

I did my best to educate Shelly on the disadvantages of fasting and the negative effects that they have on muscle tissue and all biological functions. I also stated for the record that I was not in favor of what he was going to undertake and tried to dissuade him from undertaking what he had planned. I also noted on his chart that he was starting to fast and that way I would be able to document his lack of progress, most likely a complete lack of strength gains and most likely strength loss as well as a lack on drive and energy, and what it should be attributed to.

I also informed him that while it was my position that what he was doing was wrong, I would still train him with our mutual knowledge that when he encountered the deleterious effects of the program, that he would stop and move back to a more traditional program.

He agreed and continued to come weekly. Prior to the beginning of the fast there was some upward movement but not much. He informed me on 1-7-2011 that he had started the fast and how great he felt.

I noted the date and was skeptical, however I remained open as I do not know everything and I am willing to change my beliefs when they are proven to be incorrect. His weights started to move up in 9 exercises then 8 then continued to go up weekly. Shelly came in twice a week starting in February for 4 weeks. I was willing to let him do this in an effort to show him that he did not have the recovery capacity while on the fast to handle the increase in work.

I was proven completely wrong. His weights hit another plateau and I did not want to push him ahead for fear that what he was telling me about the way he felt was not completely accurate. I believe that part of the plateau was my fear that he could not handle the work load. I allowed for a small increase as his stamina during the work outs was now very strong and he was moving from one piece to the next with no rest and the 28 minute or so workout was now only taking 23 or so. I then began to allow him to increase the number of repetitions and within a few weeks we arrived at where we are today doing 15 repetitions of the original 20 exercises with the new increased weight. His leg press has increased 25% and that is not with me pushing him as I still keep in mind that he is 79 years old and is still considered to me as a potential risk.

Doing 15 repetitions with a weight that used to be difficult at 10 is an indication that the weight can be raised by 5 % or more.

The program that he is on was used by another client of mine without any prior knowledge on my part. I noticed that they looked remarkably different in the abdominal area. They are also once a week clients and they informed me that they had followed Shelly’s advice and we all relished the success. They have been with me for 3 years and they also have not show any decrease in strength or stamina. I believe that they have at lost more than 8 pounds with a large part being abdominal area fat.

In my opinion the program Shelly is on has not had negative effects on him or my other client. There does not seem to be any lose of strength or stamina while on the program and program adherence seems to be high.

I am not allowed to provide specific dietary information to my clients and do not. This program appears, to the best of my knowledge, to be very effective especially since it is well tolerated. It has a high adherence rate as Shelly has been on it for over 70 days, and has only shown improvement in his strength and stamina and he is capable of lifting greater weights than he is at present.

I will start increasing his weights again. Keep in mind that he is 79 and basically came to me less than 30 sessions ago with no training for the last 60 years. 30 sessions in a typical training environment is only 10 weeks and will typically produce benefits twice as fast as once a week. Imagine the gains he could have.
